As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. –Matthew 20:29, NIV 2011
Some people followed Jesus because they needed someone to deliver them from their Roman-occupied misery. They wanted to make Him an earthly king-not that He wasn’t', as He is the owner of this Earth, but it wasn’t His time to rule.
Others wanted Jesus as the equivalent of a modern-day bread maker. He wisely told them to their faces, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life (John 6:27)”.
Even others wanted to find something wrong with Jesus’ ministry. (You know those types of people, right?) These were the people –Pharisees or not- who rejected Jesus, comparing Him with Beelzebub and of being an illegitimate Jew. And how did He dock those questions? With God’s wisdom, of course!
And then…there are those who want to seek God in Spirit and truth, those who don’t care and want to touch His cloak. Those who don’t care and get up on trees in order to see God do something big for them. Those who wanted their miracles to happen and those who wanted to hear about a new and abundant life.
So yes, He lived in a circus... but what do you believe in that same circus?
