Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” –Matthew 12:38, NIV 2010
But we all know that. Right now, the Pharisees wouldn’t even bother to comply. They wanted to see Jesus in action (like if they couldn’t see Him), yet they wanted a miracle just ‘cause…for the kick of it! No other reason; they wouldn’t even budge, or at least warm up to the mysteries of Jesus.
And do you know what He told them? He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. If they couldn’t believe by His words –much less His miracles-, they would believe by seeing the Son of Man rise up from the grave in three days. Like Jonah in the tummy of the big fishy monster (Flipper, Flipper!), “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days” (John 2:19)
Today, it’s not that far from the truth. People, seeing miraculous signs happen (whatever awkward they may be) don’t want to believe! Even Nineveh repented when they heard God’s judgment! Even the Queen of Sheba walked in awe of Solomon’s God-given wisdom! Even Gentiles, who learned little about God, were so repentant and worshipped God! What happened to those who don’t believe that God can do even greater?
Yes, there are counterfeits-why do you think God gave us discernment? Yes, sometimes it looks that God’s not responding to that miracle you would love or (want) Him to do at your favor. Or at least, you doubt that God is listening to your prayer. Maybe knowing stuff hinders you to believe that God can do greater things.
You believe in you want to…But I know that God is even greater when you let Him work…and you believe in Him work…
