For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority. –Colossians 2:9 & 10, NLT
On our own, nothing we accomplished will be perfect. Not even our greatest attempts at holiness or good deeds, for “all our righteous acts are like filthy rags…”(Isaiah 64:6b). Our attempts at living a clean, good life will be worthless if they don’t have the truest of reasons. Not even if we pretend to cash our blessings with God. Or even to mix truth with lies.
That was happening in Colossi –and many other churches- during the first generation of this new movement. People who believed in lies tried to spread them around, literally dividing churches and ruining the Gospel. The people were so confused, believing that they needed something more than faith to live in God’s promises. They were blending the truth with pagan faces! But just in time, this barbarity reached to Paul’s ears.
Who was to doubt that the cross wasn’t enough to breach the gap between God and sinner? Who is to say that we need something more than Jesus in our lives? More cars, more concerts, more tickets…The world constantly asks us for more and more of ourselves, completely draining us of energy that can be so useful in the hands of the Lord. This is a hindrance to God’s plans! (Although, who can trample the plans of its Maker?)
We don’t need any more abuse. We don’t need anything else to validate our worth! Jesus is everything, and WILL be forever and ever! In Christ’s arms, all blessings have been available. The debts have been paid, and we have already received the glorious promise of faith.
In Christ we are complete…That’s all I need to say.
