Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” -Mark 4:38, NIV
Sure I could say the same about us. Because, honestly— it wasn't fair.
We fought the fierce winds...and He was sleeping.
We braced the port and the starboard...and He was still sleeping.
We lost more than half our supplies...and even more He kept sleeping.
Peter started running like crazy. Thadeus kept asking Big James, “What will we do!? What will we do!?” Zealot buried the hatchet and a rock engraving of his wife. Bart had a heart attack, and Judas almost gave him poison! And I was the only sane one on that ship —the decision was in my hands.
I screamed: “Please...Please...STOP THIS MADNESS!!!”
And everyone listened. Never I had this sort of power! Whoo, I felt it draw down my spine!
“The Master is sleeping. We will wake Him up, and ask for His help. If He did it once, what can stop Him from doing it again?”
Everyone agreed. “Yes! Call on Him! Call on Him! Huzzah!”, they cheered, as the waves kept rocking the boat. Everyone felt woozy, but they kept going.
So we went to the stern to wake up our Master. I didn't want to, I reconsidered; but we had to, we had no choice! The waves kept hitting us; we tried with our feather, and it didn't work. Another wave drowned the left; we ticked Him, He giggled, but it couldn't. I almost felt anger pour inside me. We were drowning and HE kept sleeping!? Didn't He CARE about our plight!? Or was it too stupid, too vain?
So I yelled out of impulse: “...DON'T YOU CARE IF WE DROWN!?”
In an instant, He opened His eyes. He saw us, suddenly crowding against Him. He saw the sinking boat, and the grimy, salty air that tricked His nose. I heard Him grunt for a bit, then He saw the faces our teary faces. He was still there, but we were afraid. Afraid we'll lose Him. Afraid we'll lose control. Afraid we won't make it. Afraid we'll lose Him forever.
“You of little faith! Why are you still afraid?”
And in an instant...everything was quiet. The Sun was still shining brighter than ever, and the boat was drier than when we traveled in the first place!
“Who is He?”, they said.
“I don't know”, I answered. I really...don't...know.
