After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. –1 Kings 19:12 & 13, NIV
Elijah was instructed to stand on the mountain and carefully watch God’s passing by. While on Horeb, Elijah was carefully waiting for God to speak to him as His people were accustomed to for the past…forever. Three things happened: a wind, an earthquake, and a fire.
But lo…God was not in the wind. That powerful current that split mountains and smashed rocks in half was not where God wanted to talk to him.
But lo… God was not in the earthquake. That earth-splitting wonder that still leaves scientists baffled was not where God wanted to talk to him.
But lo… God was not in the fire. That powerful manifestation of energy that cleans and purifies was not where God wanted to talk to him.
Do you know how He spoke to Elijah? Actually, by a gentle whisper. A daq qowl. Just that!? Yes, man, just that.
When Elijah recognized that God was speaking to him through that whisper, he covered up his face más rápido que ligero and listened to what God had to say.
If only we could listen to God’s gentle whispers! (That goes to me, too…) We would avoid so many troubles…
