Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done. –Luke 22:42, NIV 2010
It’s incredible to see Jesus in such agony. What I find amusing, though, is how submissive Jesus was to HIs own plans. God incarnate, with all the temptations He faced, all the storms, all the rebukes and the back-sassing of His haters, was actually giving up what nobody would never, ever do: His life.
Jesus knew what He would be facing ahead way before He came to Earth. Do you think that as a man, He wasn’t pondering for a less painful option, people? There is one thing He ever showed that rose above His agony-and that was His will, stronger than the rest of the dark world surrounding Him.
There was a cup, a cup of wrath that Jesus was pleading for to be taken away. He didn’t want to abandon His mission, but LOVE made Him more than willing to lay down His life for His friends. Love was the fuel that drove Jesus to the cross.
Love is willing to give up everything for you…
Awake, awake! Rise up, Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes people stagger… This is what your Sovereign LORD says, your God, who defends his people: “See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.” -Isaiah 51:17 & 22
