They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. —Luke 24: 2 & 3, NIV
She looked around the tomb. There were no signs of a break-in. The tomb was swiftly rolled away. Someone took the chance to break the stringent rules of the Sabbath and stole the Master's body! Who committed such a travesty, such sacrilege for some stupid glory!? Was it the Romans? No, they hated Him too much to actually care about him. Was it the Pharisees? No, they were too busy enforcing their man-made rules to actually care about some Christ that his worst enemies and loyal tormentors successfully deposed in a bare few days. Yes, there was nothing nobody could do.
They said angels were walking around the broken tomb as if they had faced shards of glass. They had their swords ready for any attack. Heaven was quiet. Hell was quieter. They were commanded to wait and see what would happen next, as soon as the broken disciples entered the cabin. Everybody faced the dark void of nothing —a nothing that would confront them deeply.
Into that nothing, they suffered disappointment. The impetuous one bled his heart in tears. The loved one touched the strips of linen and they were not cut or mangled, nor destroyed in any way. The woman among them wept softly, softly resting her hand above the pillars of the tomb. As much as she wept, Someone walked towards her.
He placed a comforting hand upon her shoulder. Her weeping was much more intense. Having known that the hearts of His disciples were close to lose every sense of hope, He tenderly wiped her tears with a piece of His robe. It was glowing, but she thought that was the fashion the garden-keeper tended the plants and the weeping widows. It made no sense. Nothing made sense anymore! She quietly wept as a beautiful power full of love embraced her.
Love engages in nothing. But love cannot satisfy itself in nothing. That nothing transforms itself into a something that gives meaning and offers hope. Love cannot be unbound nor broken, for the last song that sings is the song of victory.
"Woman, why do you weep?", said the Master.
And the eyes of His disciples were finally open.
