You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
—Isaiah 26:3, ESV
Humans, not many of us want peace. For us, it means the cessation of wars and conflicts, the tail-end of tensions between nations, or some sort of written treaty that says, "All is well." Or it's a dove with an olive branch on its peak, carrying its message of peace around the world. Or we lift two fingers to everyone that waves us hello and goodbye.
But really, let's look at ourselves. Do we really want peace? Because peace means that we have no reason to fight against one another. And we can't destroy each other's hopes and dreams and ambitions. And we'd stop stealing and killing and destroying ourselves in the process. There'd be no reason to carry stress as a badge of honor that we show to people when we first meet them. Still, we'd have to work for what Someone else wants. Then we'd never be bored. Then there'd be no reason to fill our hearts with envy or lust or greed because no part of our souls would be empty because everything would be filled with peace.
See what I mean? Not a lot of people would like peace. They will never accept it as friends. Some will never acquaint themselves with peace.
But I want that peace. I desire it. It is perfect. And I need it.
